Section 6.1 Percent Change Prep Activities

Percentages are a common way to describe a quantity of interest (the β€œpart”) as a fraction of a base quantity (the β€œwhole”). The equations
\begin{equation*} \text{Percent} = \frac{\text{Part}}{\text{Whole}} \times 100, \qquad \text{Part} = \frac{\text{Percent}}{100} \times \text{Whole} \end{equation*}
can be used to find the percent or the part.

Prep Activity 6.1.1.

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census of the U.S. population every ten years. The 2020 census found that approximately 330,000,000 people lived in the U.S. The Census Bureau also reported that 5.9% of the U.S. population was under five years of age. How many children under the age of five were living in the U.S. in 2020?

Prep Activity 6.1.2.

Audryn added a $12.24 tip to a $68.00 restaurant bill.

(c)

Calculate the percent of the original $68.00 bill that Audryn paid in the total amount by plugging your answer to part (b) in to the equation:
\begin{equation*} \text{Percent} = \frac{\text{Answer to (b)}}{68.00} \times 100. \end{equation*}

(d)

What do you notice about the percents in parts (a) and (c)?

Prep Activity 6.1.3.

August bought a new shirt. Its original price was $25, but it was on sale for 15% off.

(a)

How much did August pay for the shirt? Show all of the steps that you used to find the answer.

(b)

Calculate the percent of the original price that August actually paid by plugging your answer to part (a) into the equation:
\begin{equation*} \text{Percent} = \frac{\text{Answer to (a)}}{25} \times 100. \end{equation*}

Prep Activity 6.1.4.
